  • COMPASSES vs MAPS: WHY CORPORATES STRUGGLE WITH INNOVATION

    18 December 2024

In the world of corporate innovation, there’s a universal yearning for certainty. Leaders across industries want roadmaps—detailed plans that chart a proven course to the next big breakthrough. They ask for frameworks, methodologies, and industry benchmarks that guarantee success. But the truth is, innovation isn’t a journey that follows a predrawn map — if that were the case, everyone would use the same map. It’s an expedition into the unknown, and all you can rely on is a compass.

    The Illusion of Maps

Maps are appealing because they feel safe. They offer a comforting sense of control —“just follow these five steps, and viola, you’ll be an innovative company.” This mindset is embedded in how businesses approach growth and problem-solving in the corporate world. Strategy decks are filled with milestones, deliverables, and execution plans that promise a straight path to success.

But maps have a fatal flaw when applied to innovation: the terrain is constantly shifting. What worked for one company in one moment won’t necessarily work for another. Maps are static; innovation is dynamic. Companies that cling to maps risk mistaking movement for progress, focusing on delivering what’s familiar rather than exploring what’s possible.

    The Compass Mindset

A compass doesn’t tell you where you’ll end up—it points you in a direction. It demands curiosity, adaptability, and the courage to change course as you learn more. In the context of corporate innovation, a compass means asking:

    • Where are the most significant shifts happening in our market or industry?
    • How can we start small, test, and learn without overcommitting?
    • Which assumptions about our business should we challenge?

This mindset is evident in companies that innovate successfully. They focus less on perfecting a plan and more on staying directionally correct. They prototype, pivot, and persevere in the face of uncertainty, using principles—not prescriptions—to guide their journey.

    Why Maps Are a Trap

The desire for roadmaps in innovation often leads to a fixation on replicating what’s already been done. Corporates invest in “innovation labs,” acquire startups, or implement agile workflows because those tactics worked for someone else. But these moves are often reactive, disconnected from the company’s unique goals or context.

True innovation doesn’t come from following someone else’s map—it comes from forging your own path. This requires embracing uncertainty and accepting that success is rarely linear.

    Becoming Better Explorers

For corporates to break free from the map mentality, they need to adopt the mindset of explorers. This involves a fundamental cultural shift:

Rewarding Exploration: Encourage teams to experiment and take risks, even if the outcome is uncertain. Innovation thrives on learning from failure.
Focusing on Direction: Define a clear vision or purpose to act as your compass. What kind of value do you want to create? For whom?
Iterating Relentlessly: Replace rigid plans with flexible strategies that evolve based on new information and insights.

The best innovators approach their work like an ongoing journey, not a one-time destination. They navigate uncertainty with conviction, knowing that the most transformative opportunities lie off the beaten path.

    The New Frontier

We’re in an era of unprecedented change. From AI to sustainability challenges, the future is being shaped by forces no roadmap can fully predict. The organisations that will thrive are those that embrace ambiguity, trust their compass, and confidently step into the unknown.

Clinging to maps may feel safe, but in the long run, it’s the riskiest move of all. The real choice is simple: chart your own course or risk being left behind.

  • LOOKING BACK: INSIGHTS AND PREDICTIONS FROM "THE YEAR THAT WAS IN AUSTRALIAN VENTURE CAPITAL"

    13 December 2024

Last week, we hosted our last event for the year at the Cremorne Digital Hub, fittingly, on The Year that was in Australian Venture Capital. It was a wildly interesting and candid conversation that dug into some of the major themes in VC, both locally and internationally. I think everyone in the room walked away with a fresh perspective on what has been a wildly dynamic year for VC. Here's a look back at the key takeaways from the discussion—and how they might shape the road ahead for the Aussie VC industry.

    2024: A Year of Contradictions

Let's start with the numbers that set the stage for the conversation. While Q1 of 2024 began as one of the weakest periods for venture investments in years, the mood shifted in Q2 with a surge in funding, largely thanks to the relentless hype around AI. By Q3, things had cooled off again, but Australia's VC ecosystem had held its own, even with the ups and downs. Given the global economic backdrop, we're on track for around $3 billion in deals this year—no small feat.

What made this year unique, though, wasn't just the numbers. It was the contrasting experiences in the market:

    • Early-stage startups thrived, attracting capital and excitement.
    • Later-stage companies faced a tougher climb, with longer fundraising cycles and a high cost of capital, making life difficult.

This "tale of two markets" became a recurring theme in our discussions, and it continues to shape the Australian startup ecosystem.

What the Experts Had to Say

Our panellists didn't hold back in sharing their perspectives.

Hugh Stevens (Galileo) called the year "messy," capturing the cautious mood of many funds as they grappled with portfolio rebalancing.
Rachael Neumann (Flying Fox Ventures) offered a contrasting view, describing 2024 as a year of steady execution after the chaos of 2021 and 2022. For Flying Fox, it was about maintaining focus, deploying $8 million across 15 investments.
Alexandra Clunies Ross (Artesian) highlighted a clear divide: early-stage companies were buzzing, but later-stage firms were facing the grind of heightened competition and extended timelines when fundraising.

These perspectives painted a picture of an ecosystem that's recalibrating—a mix of optimism and realism as investors and founders adapt to changing dynamics.

From "Growth at All Costs" to Smarter Scaling

One shift everyone agreed on was the move away from the "grow fast, no matter the cost" mentality. Founders are being held to higher standards and expected to understand their financials inside out—customer acquisition costs, revenue models, and pathways to profitability are under the spotlight.

Rachael summed it up perfectly: while capital remains essential in high-stakes, winner-takes-all markets, founders who pair ambition with operational discipline will ultimately prevail.

The AI Hype: Game-Changer or Bubble?

No conversation in 2024 would be complete without touching on AI. It dominated the conversation, with panellists debating whether we're witnessing the birth of a new era or living through a bubble in the making.

Interestingly, the conversation around AI came down to two key themes:

Investors see real promise in vertical AI—sector-specific solutions like health tech and legal tech are outpacing generic tools.
Operational efficiency was another big topic. Startups using AI to streamline their internal operations are gaining a clear edge over competitors.

There was some scepticism, too. The concern? Inflated valuations and overconfidence among some founders. It's a space to watch, no doubt, but one where opportunity and caution are most investors' minds.

    The Challenges Facing Incumbents

One of the most fascinating parts of the discussion was how established players—think Salesforce and other SaaS giants—are adapting to the rise of AI. The consensus? It's adapt or die. Companies clinging to traditional, structured data approaches risk being left behind as the world moves toward tools that can handle unstructured data at scale.

The panellists emphasised that innovation isn't optional—it's essential for survival in this fast-evolving landscape.

    Australian VC: The Global Perspective

Our conversation also dug into the unique challenges and opportunities facing Australian VC. Early-stage excitement is still strong, but late-stage startups face a more challenging road. Adding to the complexity is the renewed interest from US investors, often offering terms that local funds can't easily match. As Hugh noted, 2025 could be the year when global funds start to really eat the lunch of Aussie VCs.

One key takeaway for founders is to think globally. The local market is a great starting point, but for many sectors, true growth will come from international traction. Investors are increasingly looking for founders with a global mindset and the ability to deliver on it.

    What's Next for Venture Capital?

Looking ahead to 2025, the panel left us with some thought-provoking predictions:

AI regulation will be a defining challenge as governments try to balance innovation with consumer protection.
User-friendly applications that bring AI to life in simple, impactful ways will thrive.
Niche markets—from waste management to climate tech—are ripe for disruption, with investors hunting for focused solutions to big problems.

    Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the event, I was struck by the energy in the room. Yes, the challenges are real—whether it's navigating inflated AI expectations or the difficulties facing late-stage companies. But there's also a shared sense of opportunity.

For founders, the message is clear: focus on your fundamentals, think globally, and stay nimble. For investors, it's about finding the sweet spot between ambition and discipline.

As we move into 2025, one thing is sure: we're in for another fascinating year in Aussie VC. Onwards and upwards!

  • UNDERSTANDING NETWORKED INNOVATION: CONNECTING IDEAS FOR GREATER IMPACT

    15 November 2024

In today’s fast-paced world, innovation rarely happens in isolation. More than ever, breakthroughs emerge when people from different sectors, backgrounds, and areas of expertise come together to share ideas and collaborate. This collective approach is known as networked innovation.

At its heart, networked innovation is about harnessing the power of connections. By bringing together high-growth ventures, universities, the public sector, and investors, we can spark creativity and develop solutions that might not surface when working alone. When diverse talents and organisations collaborate, they combine their unique perspectives and expertise, leading to fresh ideas and innovative thinking.

This approach is crucial because the challenges we face today are often complex and multifaceted. No single individual or organisation has all the answers. By connecting high-growth ventures with academic research from universities, support from the public sector, and resources from investors, we enrich the pool of ideas and accelerate problem-solving. Collaborative efforts foster creativity, and exposure to new viewpoints stimulates innovative thinking. Moreover, these connections can lead to partnerships and initiatives that might not have been possible otherwise.

During Tech Week at the Cremorne Digital Hub, we saw networked innovation in action. The hub was alive with energy as startups engaged with university researchers, tech enthusiasts shared insights with public sector representatives, and entrepreneurs found common ground with investors. These interactions weren’t just casual chats—they were the starting points for potential collaborations and innovations. For example, a tech startup and a university team might brainstorm a new digital solution based on cutting-edge research, highlighting how connecting different dots can lead to groundbreaking concepts.

At the Cremorne Digital Hub, we’re passionate about fostering these connections. We believe that by providing a space where ideas can collide—whether it’s between high-growth ventures, academia, industry, or investors—we can help drive innovation forward. Through events, workshops, or simply offering a place for people to meet and talk, we’re dedicated to connecting the dots across our networked innovation ecosystem.

Innovation thrives when we come together. We invite you to be part of this collaborative journey. So come to our events and reach out if we can help your company connect the dots across our networked innovation ecosystem. Whether you’re looking to share your ideas or find new inspiration, there’s a place for you here. Together, we can turn exciting ideas into reality and take innovation to new heights.

After all, when we unite our efforts, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

  • THE HEART OF INNOVATION AND GROWTH: SOME REFLECTIONS ON TECH WEEK

    10 November 2024

When we kicked off Tech Week at the CDH, we had a sense that we were in for something special. But honestly, seeing our space come alive the way it did was beyond anything we could’ve imagined. The energy was electric—innovators, industry leaders, startups, and tech enthusiasts all mingling under one roof. In short, Tech Week really showcased the vibrant innovation ecosystem we have here in Victoria.

Strolling through the hub during the week, it struck me how CDH had become more than just a venue; it felt like the heartbeat of the tech community. Everywhere I looked, people were deep in conversation—over coffee, in workshops, after panel discussions. Ideas were bouncing around, connections were being made, and you could just tell that some of these casual chats were the start of something big.

What makes me particularly proud is how CDH helps our community of partners navigate the sometimes overwhelming innovation landscape. Let’s face it, this space can be complex and scattered. Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur or an established business trying to keep up with the latest trends, it can be a lot to handle. That’s why we’re so passionate about connecting the dots—linking industries, fostering collaborations, and turning great ideas into reality.

Tech Week was a perfect example of this mission in action. We hosted a mix of events catering to all corners of the tech world. Startups had the chance to pitch their ideas, established companies explored new collaborations, and everyone walked away having learnt something new. The buzz was incredible, and the feedback we’ve had shows just how valuable these connections are.

Reflecting on Tech Week, it reminded me why we do what we do at CDH. Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it thrives when people come together, share ideas, and collaborate. Our role is to make that happen, to create spaces where the tech community can connect and grow. I encourage you to enjoy this short video which captures the electric energy of Tech Week 2024.

Here’s to keeping the momentum going, connecting more dots, and shaping the future of tech in Victoria!
